La Center police arrested an alleged car prowler after the man’s stepfather helped officers find him.

An officer was called to the 600 block of East Fifth Street at about 5:20 a.m. Monday for a report of a man trying to break into a vehicle, said La Center Police Chief Marc Denney. When the officer arrived, he contacted the man, later identified by police as Dylan Donovan Ogden Mayfield, 20, of La Center. The officer tried to detain Mayfield, but Mayfield shoved the officer and fled on foot, Denney said.

Officers swarmed the area and set up a perimeter to search for Mayfield.

When he ran away, Mayfield left behind his jacket, which contained drug paraphernalia and marijuana, Denney said. Using the jacket, a police dog tried to track Mayfield’s scent.

After about an hour and a half, police had not located Mayfield, and the search was called off, Denney said.

However, the officer who first responded to the scene recognized the car prowler and went to Mayfield’s house. Mayfield wasn’t home, but the officer spoke with his stepfather, telling him to call police if his stepson showed up.

A couple hours later, Mayfield’s stepfather called police and Mayfield was arrested, Denney said.

Mayfield was taken into custody on suspicion of third-degree assault, second-degree vehicle prowl, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, possession of a controlled substance and third-degree theft.

La Center has had about 60 cases of auto prowls in the last two years years, all of which were prowls of unlocked vehicles, according to police. The agency asked residents to be diligent and lock unattended vehicles and remove all personal property of value.
