Hockinson grad hits NCAA-II provisional mark

Northwest Nazarene University sophomore Taylor Van Valey was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after qualifying for NCAA Division II nationals in the shot put Saturday.

The Hockinson High School graduate placed sixth with a mark of 44 feet, 6 3/4 inches at the Jacksons/New Balance Boise Indoor meet at the Jacksons Indoor Track facility at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho.

Van Valey’s effort was a personal record by more than a foot and a half, and a provisional qualifying mark for NCAA-II indoor nationals. It is the second-best mark by a GNAC athlete so far this indoor season and 26th in NCAA-II, according to the nnusports.com website.

Van Valey and the Crusaders will compete this weekend at the Boise State Team Challenge at the same Nampa facility.

Cross country

WWU’s Guenther again USTFCCCA All-Academic

Western Washington University junior Taylor Guenther was honored for the third time among those receiving United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Cross Country All-Academic honors announced Wednesday.

The Prairie High School graduate is a multidisciplinary studies with a 3.86 grade point average. Guenther, a Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic all-star for the second time, placed 51st at the NCAA II National Championships and 10th at the GNAC Championships to earn all-star honors.

Women’s basketball

Holboke scores 26 in Dominican U. win

Dominican University sophomore guard Carly Holboke scored a career-high 26 points in an 86-64 win over Fresno Pacific on Feb. 4 in Fresno, Calif.

The Mountain View High School graduate was 9 of 15 from the field, matching a career high with five 3-pointers in nine attempts from that range.

Holboke averages 10.9 points a game for the Penguins (10-10, 7-7 Pacific West Conference).

Women’s basketball

Seattle’s Ross grabs career high in rebounds

Seattle University junior center Taelor Ross grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and also scored 14 points in a 59-56 Western Athletic Conference win Feb. 5 at Grand Canyon University.

Vancouver’s Ross, a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, is averaging 11.5 points and 6.7 rebounds a game for the Redhawks (7-16, 4-4 WAC).

Indoor track and field

Arn second at WSU

George Fox University senior Charity Arn placed second in the indoor pentathlon at the WSU Open meet in Pullman. The Woodland High School graduate totaled 3,302 points, second best this season in NCAA Division III.
