Swimming: Camas dominates 4A district meet

The Columbian

As fast as the Camas boys swimmers were in preliminary heats on Friday, they didn’t sink any for the finals on Saturday.

The Papermakers won nine event finals at the 4A district meet Saturday at Kelso and will be sending a strong group to the 4A state meet next weekend in Federal Way.

Camas scored 396 points to outdistance second place Mountain View (243).

Camas dominated all three relays and had three double event district champions.

Mark Kim won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free; Kasey Calwell won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke; and Lucas Ulmer won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

John Utas, Tom Utas, Luke Albert and Jeff Fadlovich were part of Camas state-qualifying relay teams.

The top two placers at the 4A district automatically qualified for state in addition to any swimmer reaching the qualifying time standard.

Mountain View’s Chris Xue was also a double district champ, winning the 50 and 100 free events.

In the 3A meet, Columbia River’s Cal Duus and Josh Bottelberghe each added a state event on Saturday after reaching automatic qualifying standards in the preliminaries on Friday.

Duus, who had already qualified in the 100 fly, won the 100 fly district title and added the 100 back title as well.

Bottelberghe, who had qualified in the 100 breast, won that title and reached state in the 200 freestyle with a state qualifying time.

Only the winner of each event in the 3A district finals, plus any state qualifying times, were guaranteed a spot at state.

Hanford easily won the team title with 461 1/2 points. Kelso was second (240 1/2 ).

At the 2A district meet at Mark Morris, Hockinson place second behind the host school 346-280.

Hockinson swimmers won eight events in the finals with three double individual winners.

Will Morris won the 200 free and 500 free, Dylan Osborne won the 50 free and 100 fly (meet record time of 52.07 seconds), and Jonah Rodewald won the 200 IM and 100 breast.

Hockinson also won the 200 medley and 400 free relay district titles. The team of Osborne, Mooris, Evan Oja and Rodewald set a 2A district meet record in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:26.84, topping the old record of 3:27.67 set in 2011 by Hockinson.
