A fire tore through a two-story outbuilding early Sunday morning in La Center, but emergency crews were able to extinguish the flames before the fire spread to a nearby home.

The homeowner reported the fire at about 1:30 a.m. at 1524 W. C Ave. When firefighters arrived they found the first story of the outbuilding, a garage, engulfed in flames, Clark County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy said. About 15 firefighters and three fire chiefs from stations in La Center, Ridgefield, Woodland and Dollars Corner responded. They had the flames knocked down in about 10 minutes.

The fire was “within an inch” of spreading to a manufactured home, Dawdy said. Nobody was inside the outbuilding, and residents of the manufactured home were not displaced by the fire, he added.

The second story of the outbuilding was described by firefighters as a finished playroom, Dawdy said. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage the building sustained were not available Sunday.

The Clark County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire. Officers from the La Center Police Department also responded to the scene and took photos that will assist fire marshals in their investigation, Dawdy said.

Although the fire’s cause was unknown Sunday, Dawdy said, many outbuilding fires are caused by space heaters during this time of year.

“Please be careful with portable heating devices,” he said. “They are a leading cause of fire.”
