The Woodland Beavers were right with the W.F. West Bearcats at halftime of their Class 2A District 4 girls basketball semifinal game.

Then post Woodland McKenna Mulder picked up her fourth foul and the challenge became much bigger.

The second-ranked Bearcats from Chehalis pulled away in the second half on Monday to beat the Beavers 57-36, a win that sends W.F. West to Friday’s district title game against top-ranked Mark Morris.

Monday’s loss means that Woodland (13-9) must win games on Wednesday and Saturday to qualify for state. The Beavers play Black Hills at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Mark Morris High School.

W.F. West led 27-26 at halftime, but when the 6-foot-1 Mulder picked up her fourth foul in the first minute of the third quarter the Bearcats size advantage allowed W.F. West to gain the upper hand.

Posts Tiana Parker and Julie Spencer scored 14 of W.F. West’s 16 points in the third quarter as the Bobcats stretched their lead to 11 points. In addition to Mulder’s foul trouble, the absence of reserve post Kate Cochran added to the match-up challenge for the Beavers. Cochran injured her knee in Friday’s win over Centralia. Woodland coach Glen Flanagan said he is unsure if Cochran will be able to play this week.

Parker finished with 24 points and Spencer with 15 to lead W.F. West.

For Woodland, Sidra Malik had 11 points and four assists. Mulder scored six of her seven points in the first quarter, which ended with the Beavers ahead 15-13. Jessica Flanagan had 10 rebounds and three assists.

“We were getting the 50-50 balls. We were hustling and we were limiting their shots,” Glen Flanagan said of the successful first half for Woodland..
