LONGVIEW — Saturday was a night of lost opportunities for the Woodland boys basketball team.

The Beavers went cold, going scoreless in the final 5 minutes and 44 seconds and falling to Centralia 55-50 in the third-place game of the Class 2A district tournament.

The loss ended the Beavers’ season, but it won’t end their thoughts of “What if?”

A tight, back-and-forth battle was in Woodland’s favor after Tanner Sixberry’s putback basket gave the Beavers a 50-48 with 5:44 left.

Woodland held onto that lead until Centralia tied it with 2:12 left. The Tigers forged a 53-50 lead on a three-point play by Angel Verduzco.

Then the Tigers gave the Beavers four tries to tie the game in the final minute, missing the front end of one-plus-ones three times in the final minute.

But Woodland only managed one shot while committing multiple turnovers to end their season. Hodges Bailey’s two free throws with three seconds left sent the Tigers to the 2A state tournament.

Ryan Sturdivan led the Beavers with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Hodges Bailey and Brannic Bailey led Centralia’s balanced attack with 11 points each.
