Washougal — Washougal School District Career and Technical Education Director Marsha Spencer announced she will retire at the end of the school year, ending a 37-year career in education.

Since Spencer was hired as the CTE director in 2009, she has brought such classes as American Sign Language, digital photography and medical terminology to the high schools. She also revived the middle school CTE program, which included robotics and desktop publishing.

She started with the Washougal School District in 1988 as a business teacher. Before that, Spencer worked at the Bend-LaPine School District in Oregon and the Evergreen School District.

“She is a tireless advocate for vocational learning and consistently searches for ways to support students,” Washougal High School Principal Aaron Hansen said in a release sent out by the district. “We will miss Marsha’s leadership, compassion and dedication to the Washougal community.”
