Officials investigate suspicious death of cats

Two cats were killed in a neighborhood near Green Mountain, and Clark County Animal Control officials are investigating their suspicious deaths.

The adult male cats, which had been missing since Christmas Eve, were found last week underneath an overturned wheelbarrow at a mobile home park at 21201 N.E. 58th St., a rural area east of Vancouver and north of Camas.

Evidence collected by investigators suggests that the cats were covered by the wheelbarrow when they were still alive, animal control manager Paul Scarpelli said.

“It would be an act of God for the wheelbarrow to fall down and capture two male cats,” he said. “It does not appear to be an accident.”

He said that no one saw the incident happen and no one has yet admitted to the crime.

“Our investigation isn’t closed, but we’ve got nothing left to work with,” he said. “If someone has something to share, we’d be very grateful for that contact.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Clark County Animal Control at 360-397-2488.

In the meantime, animal control officers are working with the neighbors of the mobile home park to put out flyers explaining what happened, explaining what animal cruelty is and asking anyone with information to come forward.
