Letter: Two jobs concurrently is too much

Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center, ran for freeholder on the promise that she would be a significant contributor in composing a new county charter. Her position as a state legislator would be no impediment. As it turned out she was absent from many freeholder meetings while the Legislature was in session, after which she had unfortunate family problems and missed more sessions as she did not resign to allow someone else a chance to contribute. She was not present for the final vote. She even refused to help voters by taking a position on the charter vote.

Now she has announced her intention to run for the Clark County council chair position and if elected would remain in the state Legislature. These two elected positions are called part time, but in fact are time intensive. One or both of these jobs would not receive her necessary attention. As these are leadership positions they cannot be “phoned in.” Having these two jobs simultaneously is not illegal, but would (again) not provide the effort the voters deserve. I ask her to announce that she would resign the state Senate if she is elected chair.
