Clark hoop teams clinch NWAC tourney berths

Both the Clark men’s and women’s basketball teams clinched berths to the NWAC Tournament with wins at South Puget Sound on Wednesday night at Olympia.

The Clark women clinched the No. 4 seed from the West region thanks to a 72-63 win.

The Clark men clinched their spot in the postseason tournament with a 92-50 win over the Clippers. The Penguins can finish no lower than the No. 2 West seed, and can win the No. 1 seed with a win over Highline in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Clark.

Taylor Howlett scored 27 points on 6 of 18 shooting from the floor and 12 of 16 free throws for the Clark women (14-9, 9-6 West) as they completed a series sweep of the Clippers. Alexa Orcutt had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Clark men (19-7, 12-3 West) won their fifth game in a row as Hayden Hall scored 32 points on 14 of 17 shooting. Clark was in command from the get-go and lead 59-23 at halftime.

Both Clark teams will honor its sophomores on Saturday in the regular-season finale against Highline. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. and the men follow at 3 p.m. After the games is the annual Clark College Athletic Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony at 5 p.m. in the Penguin Union Building. The NWAC Tournament is March 7-10 at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

The Clark women’s first game will be 10 a.m. on March 7 against East No. 1, either Walla Walla or Columbia Basin. The Clark men, if the No. 2 West seed, would play in the opening game at 8 a.m. on March 7 against East No. 3; or as the No. 1 West seed, play at 6 p.m. on March 7 against East No. 4.
