College Notebook: Decker third in 800 as SPU claims GNAC title

Seattle Pacific junior Lynelle Decker placed third in the 800-meter run at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Jackson’s Track facility in Nampa, Idaho.

The Mountain View High School graduate finished in 2 minutes, 12.76 seconds. Decker was also 14th in the mile, in 5:18.26. Simon Fraser’s Lindsey Butterworth ran both races.

Decker’s six points in the 800 helped the Falcons claim the team title, 146-134 over Alaska-Anchorage.

GNAC Championships

Among other results:

• Taylor Van Valey (Northwest Nazarene University, Hockinson High School) placed third in both the shot put with a mark of 13.20 meters (43 feet, 3¾ inches) and the weight throw with a mark of 15.72 m (51-7). She was the only Crusader to earn All-GNAC status in two events.

• Shannon Porter (Saint Martin’s University, Hockinson High School) placed third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:37.23; seventh in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:18.86; and 11th in the mile with a time of 5:16.18.

• Taylor Guenther (Western Washington University, Prairie High School) was seventh in the 5,000 with a time of 18:34.01 and 10th in the 3,000 with a time of 10:27.18.

Kirkov qualifies for NAIA meet

Concordia University junior Roman Kirkov was runner-up in the 1,500 meters at the Warner Pacific 50/50 meet Friday and Saturday in Portland.

The Union High School graduate’s time of 4:00.08 is an automatic qualifier for the NAIA national championships, March 5-7 in Geneva, Ohio.

Kirkov also helped the Cavaliers’ 3,200 relay to a time of 7:23.04, which is third on the NAIA national performance list this season.

Redhawks’ Ross blocks ‘Roos

Seattle University junior center Taelor Ross of Vancouver recorded a career-high six blocked shots Thursday in the Redhawks’ 62-61 road loss at Missouri-Kansas City. Ross, a graduate of Saint Mary’s Academy in Portland, also had 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Kangaroos.

She is averaging 11.6 points and 6.9 rebounds for the Redhawks (8-19).
