SPOKANE — An unidentified female walking on BNSF railroad tracks in Spokane was killed after she was struck by a train.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the woman was trespassing west of the Sullivan Street overpass at about 7 a.m. Thursday when she was hit and killed. Melonas says the crew blew its whistle and initiated emergency braking, but was not able to stop in time. He says they did not have further information about the woman.

The train was hauling general merchandise on a trip between Dilworth, Minn., and Pasco. Melonas says about 60 trains travel on those double tracks daily. The line was closed for several hours, but was expected to reopen by mid-morning.
