A Ridgefield man was involved in a head-on collision that blocked all traffic on a portion of U.S. Highway 101 for seven hours Friday night in Oregon.

Traffic came to a halt around 6 p.m. at milepost 130.5, near Depoe Bay, Ore., when a semitrailer and a 1991 Mazda pickup truck crashed into each other. Stephen Johnson, a 57-year-old from Ridgefield, was behind the wheel of the semitrailer.

Johnson was not injured, and he cooperated with police at the scene. But the crash sent Raymond David, a 27-year-old from Otis, Ore., flying from his pickup.

Investigators say David was speeding and passing cars around turns in a no-passing zone when he lost control, began to fishtail into oncoming traffic and collided with the semitrailer. The 2009 Sterling tractor-trailer was full of frozen foods, police said.

David was taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, Ore., with serious injuries. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan in Corvallis, Ore., and finally to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland.

The crash left about 100 gallons of diesel spilling from the tractor-trailer onto the highway and down into a nearby ravine. Firefighters cleaned up the spill.

Oregon State Police are heading up a multi-agency investigation into the crash.
