Tim Martinez: Getting caught up with standings and statistics

Tim Martinez: High school sports

Winter break is a good time to get caught up.

So, I spent the past couple of weeks updating some things on The Columbian’s website — our high school basketball standings and our area basketball scoring leaders.

The results were mixed.

With our basketball standings, I found success.

If you go to the high school sports page at Columbian.com — which can be found at http://www.columbian.com/news/sports/preps or if that’s too much, http://www.360preps.com — and scroll down on the right, you’ll find the headings “Standings / Schedules.”

Under this, you’ll find standings for boys and girls basketball for the 4A Greater St. Helens League, 3A Greater St. Helens League, 2A Greater St. League and 1A Trico League.

I can confidently say these are the most accurate and up-to-date standings for these leagues that you’ll find anywhere, better than MaxPreps or even the league websites.

If you click on these standings, you can access the schedule and results for each team in that league.

Local basketball teams have played between eight and 12 games so far this season. Among the boys teams with the best win-loss records in the area include Union (9-1), Mark Morris (8-1), Washougal (8-1), Skyview (6-2), Fort Vancouver (7-3), Columbia River (7-3) and Kelso (7-3). The best among girls teams are Columbia River (9-1), La Center (9-1), Washougal (8-1), Mark Morris (8-2), Kalama (8-2), White Salmon (8-2), Kelso (7-2) and Camas (7-3).

Win-loss record don’t tell the whole story, but they can give you some insight on teams to watch down the stretch.

Now, as far as scoring leaders went, I didn’t quite have as much success. That’s because not every game played over the winter break was reported to us, so I have some holes in my tabulations.

I’m hoping, with some help from area coaches, to close those gaps in the next couple of days and post the top scoring leaders in the region.

But while we wait for that to happen, I’d like to give a shoutout to the teams that have perfect marks for reporting scores.

Among boys teams, the list includes Battle Ground, Camas, Heritage, Mountain View, Skyview, Union, Prairie, Washougal, Woodland and La Center. The girls list consists of Battle Ground, Camas, Evergreen, Heritage, Mountain View, Union, Columbia River, Prairie, Hockinson, Hudson’s Bay, Washougal, Woodland and La Center.

Games on the internet

Ron Soanka and Matt Conboy have been busy in December, providing play-by-play coverage of prep basketball games on the website http://www.elisportsnetwork.com.

Ron and Matt will be at a pair of 4A GSHL girls-boys doubleheaders this week. On Tuesday, they’ll cover Skyview-Evergreen with the girls game starting at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, they’ll cover Battle Ground-Heritage with the girls game starting at 5:30 p.m.
