Good things come in 3s for Union, Paulson

It was a perfect start for the Union boys basketball team, coming off a not-so perfect win in the Titans’ previous game.

Micah Paulson made four 3-pointers on consecutive possessions in the first quarter, and the Titans cruised from there to a 62-42 victory over Skyview in a Class 4A Greater St. Helens League boys basketball game.

Paulson said the Titans played sluggish coming off the holiday break, but he does not expect any more lackluster performances.

“Teams are going to have lulls. We knew what we had to do. We had two great practices this week,” Paulson said.

That came after Union topped Heritage 74-66 on Tuesday.

“We were still kind of asleep,” Paulson said. “It woke us up. It was like a punch in the mouth. It reminded us we’ve got to play our game the whole time.”

The Titans (11-1, 4-0 GSHL) did that on Friday.

There was a fast-break dunk from Riley Hawken to make it 4-4. Then craziness ensued.

• Skyview (6-4, 1-2) had a 10-second violation. Paulson responded with a 3-pointer.

• Skyview had another 10-second violation. Paulson had another 3-pointer.

• Skyview had a back-court violation. Paulson for three.

• Skyview turned it over. Paulson was true from deep again.

It was a 14-0 run, 12 from Paulson, and the Titans were on their way.

“I was just shooting the ball. That’s what I do everyday,” Paulson said. “That’s what we practice every day. My coach believes in me. I believe in my teammates. If they were open, I would have passed to them. I got some great screens from them. I got the passes right where I needed them. I was in rhythm, and I just knocked the shots down.”

By the end of the night, Paulson was 6 for 10 from 3-point range. He finished with a game-high 21 points.

Union led by 16 at the half — Paulson beat the horn with a 3-pointer — and then Cameron Cranston got hot in the third quarter for Union, scoring all 10 of his points.

The Storm got back-to-back 3-pointers from Terran Scruggs and Daniel Thomas to cut a 17-point deficit to 11, but Cranston responded with a 3-pointer.

Marcus Lord led Skyview with 14 points.

Union forced the Storm into 23 turnovers.
