Desiree Hellegers, associate professor of English at Washington State University Vancouver, has transformed her book about women and homelessness into a play. Two staged readings of “No Room of Her Own: Women’s Stories of Homelessness, Life, Death and Resistance” will come to life as part of Portland’s Fertile Ground Festival of New Plays.

The readings are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24 at Copeland Commons at Tabor Space, 5441 S.E. Belmont St., Portland. Advance tickets are $10 at www.boxofficetickets.com. Tickets at the door are $15.

“No Room of Her Own” will be in full production in late spring.

Drawing on oral history interviews, the story explores the experiences of 15 women who struggle against health issues and threats of violence while working to call attention to routine deaths of homeless people.
