A 24-year-old man appeared in Clark County Superior Court on Wednesday in connection with an interrupted burglary in east Vancouver.
Levi L. Holland of Vancouver is accused of breaking into a house Tuesday in the 16000 block of Southeast 31st Street. The 74-year-old homeowner, John Palles, called 911 after he returned to the residence at about 1:30 p.m. to find suitcases in his front yard and a broken bedroom window, Vancouver police said. When Palles entered the residence, the burglar assaulted him and threw him to the ground, according to a court affidavit by Vancouver police Officer Todd Schwartz. The burglar then fled on foot just as police arrived on the scene.
While police searched for the man, Fisher’s Landing Elementary was placed on a modified lockdown for seven minutes, said Evergreen Public Schools spokeswoman Gail Spolar. The suspect was running through backyards and jumping fences in the Fisher’s Landing area. Police tracked him down in the 17000 block of Southeast 34th Street and used a Taser to subdue him, police said. He was taken into custody and transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center before being booked into the Clark County Jail.
Palles reported that cash and jewelry valued at $5,000 were missing from his home. Only $46 in cash and some foreign coins were recovered, Schwartz wrote.
