Letter: Support for abortion restrictions

About 40 people gathered on the Clark County Courthouse steps last Friday to call for increased community support and restored legal protection for tiny human beings still growing in their mothers’ wombs.

Women and men and youth held signs for passersby to see: “Women deserve better than abortion”; “Women regret their abortion”; “Men regret abortion”; “Adoption the loving option”; “The first inalienable right is life”; “Abortion stops one heart and breaks another”; “Love them both.”

The annual Roe v. Wade memorial rally commemorated the Jan. 22 anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that overturned the laws of all 50 states and imposed abortion on demand anytime before birth. In 1970, Washington state had legalized abortion up to the fourth month of pregnancy and only if the mother had not yet felt the baby move. Our state also required a husband to sign permission for his wife and parents to sign permission for minors. The informed consent form mentioned the possibility of physical and emotional complications, including death and sterility. The Supreme Court’s “diktat” swept all restrictions away.

Clark County Right to Life sponsored last week’s gathering. More information is available on their website, www.clarkrtl.org.
