PULLMAN — Washington State University is reviving its forestry major and will begin admitting students this fall.

WSU had phased out the program in 2011 as part of budget reductions.

The Capital Press reports the Legislature instructed that the major be re-established in WSU’s 2013-2015 biennial budget.

A leader for forestry at the university, Professor Keith Blatner, says the job market for foresters in Washington is improving, especially as the older forester retire.

Some 3.18 billion board-feet of timber was harvested in 2013 in Washington, according to the Washington Timber Harvest Report.

WSU hopes for at least 100 forestry student majors within the next few years.
