Letter: Parties demonstrate idiocy

The Columbian
Published: January 22, 2015, 4:00pm

The recent actions of the Clark County Republican Party are typical of both political parties. Their attempt to censure Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler is an example of political idiocy. Our two senators from Washington follow the Democratic Party line to the letter. This is also an example of political idiocy.

The United States is a representative republic. Our elected officials are supposed to represent the people as a whole, not just the far left or far right. That involves compromise and means that the opposing parties should recognize that the other might have a good idea once in a while. Those officials must be ready to use their common sense.

Those who would simply follow a strict party line are merely puppets and make their jobs unnecessary. We just let the parties make the laws. Just think of all the money we would save by not having to pay members of Congress and their staffs. Both parties are financed by donations.

Our elected officials in Washington, D.C., are hired to enact laws that are beneficial to the U.S. as a whole and rescind those laws that are detrimental or no longer functional. To the Clark County Republican Party: “Do something constructive, like finding common ground and accomplishing something.”
