Alexa Orcutt had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Caylee Newsom added 16 points and eight rebounds as the Clark College women’s basketball team used a solid defensive effort to beat South Puget Sound 63-55 on Saturday.

The Penguins held South Puget Sound to 17 points in the first half and shut out the Clippers’ two leading scorers.

“We’re playing a bit shorthanded right now, with just seven available players,” coach Al Aldridge said. “So we kind of ran out of gas in the second half. But we still did a good job on defense.”

The Penguins outrebounded the Clippers 26-12 in the second half to fend off their second-half rally.

“We got Bryn Tennyson back after a week and a half, and she played some major minutes for us on a bad leg,” Aldridge said.

Micaela Bitanga added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Taylor Howlett had nine points and six rebounds.

Clark (10-5, 5-2 NWAC West Region) will play at Highline on Wednesday. Clark and Highline are tied for third in the NWAC West Region.
