Some Oregon home brewers to try using treated sewage water

PORTLAND — A dozen home brewers in the Portland area will take part in an experiment this summer to make beer from water recycled from a sewage treatment plant.

KGW reports Washington County’s Clean Water Services is sponsoring a competition to demonstrate different uses for its recycled water.

The agency says its special purification system makes sewer water cleaner than typical drinking water.

But don’t expect to find “sewage brewage” on store shelves.

The competition this summer is just for fun and will require a policy exception from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
