Letter: Unreasonable to be unaccountable

Published: July 2, 2015, 12:00am

As a disabled veteran and caregiver/rescuer for traumatized, sick and unwanted pets, the absolute worst time of my existence is during fireworks. If someone can explain a legitimate reason for traumatizing the people who fought for the “freedoms” of the American people and traumatizing pets, wildlife and a lot of regular folks, I am willing to listen. And for those who set off fireworks “responsibly” please explain it to the animals, veterans and others. I am sure they will understand.

It is only fair that the cost of damage done by fireworks should be borne by the individuals who cause said damage, not the taxpayers at large. The total cost should be paid by the organizations/individuals selling the fireworks in the form of a prorated tax on sales/profits. I believe that all vendors require a license so it should not be too difficult to tally the total cost of damage in an area and then send out the bills to be paid before the next license is issued. Or ban the public sales and allow people to attend organized displays instead of them having to stay at home to protect property, animals, children and even veterans.
