Soccer notes: Timbers move Sunday’s start time to 8 p.m.

The kickoff for Sunday’s Portland Timbers match against San Jose has been moved to 8 p.m. at Providence Park.

The Timbers announced the change on Thursday, citing a forecast for temperatures in the upper 90s. ESPN2 will show the match.

“The safety of our fans, players and everyone involved with the match is our No. 1 priority,” said Mike Golub, president of business operations for the Timbers.

The club also announced that sealed plastic bottles containing water and sports drinks will be allowed into Providence Park for the Sunday game and for the Thorns Friday home match.

T2 tops Arizona United

Two early goals sent Portland Timbers 2 on the way to a 3-1 win over visiting Arizona United on Thursday at the University of Portland’s Merlo Field.

Kharlton Belmar, Fatawu Safia and Seth Casiple scored for T2.

Portland (6-8-2) is seventh in the USL Western Conference. Arizona (6-7-1) is eighth. Camas native Brent Richards played the full match for T2, and had an early header off the crossbar.

Thorns at home

The bottom two teams in the National Women’s Soccer League meet today at Providence Park as Sky Blue FC visits the Portland Thorns. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and a live webstream is available at www.portlandthornsfc.com.

The Thorns (2-3-4) are in eighth place and are winless since starting the season Sky Blue (1-5-4) is ninth.
