Letter: Effect change via electoral process

Oh, the hypocrisy. It’s fascinating how conservatives react when a Supreme Court decision does not please them. The decisions on Obamacare and same-sex marriage elicited many hyperbolic reactions from the right, including accusations of “an activist court” (Carly Fiorina), “judicial tyranny” (Mike Huckabee), demands to make the members of the court stand for periodic election (Ted Cruz) and a suggestion to abolish the court altogether (Bobby Jindal).

Do liberals react strenuously when they disagree with a Supreme Court decision? You bet we do. Remember Citizens United? We have been trying to figure out how to undo that damage ever since. A constitutional amendment seems like the most reasonable way, but in today’s political climate that seems unlikely. We realize we must turn our efforts to the electoral process to effect changes in the law.

Some of the more reasonable conservative voices (Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio among others) did the same thing this week. They stated their disagreement, took a deep breath, pulled up their big boy pants and moved on, looking forward to the next election. Perhaps, upon reflection, they remembered that the Supreme Court was established by our Constitution.

Quite possibly Winston Churchill said it best when he quoted an unknown source, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those others that have been tried from time to time.”
