This confuses me. To raise money to support their charitable work, several local nonprofits sell fireworks. Why? These charitable organizations profit from a product so dangerous that deaths from factory explosions are not uncommon, thousands of revelers are injured every year, countless fires are started, vets suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder are returned to a “war zone,” and pets require special care.
To support their good works these nonprofits rely on a retail business model so troublesome that sales are limited to days, or hours, or even banned outright in some communities. Do these nonprofits really believe the sale of a dangerous product is their best or only fundraising opportunity? Or are they just ignoring the negative impacts they have on this community?
