Letter: OWL party was a hoot

How many people remember the OWL political party that was formed in 1976? The letters OWL stood for two different names, one of those names being “Out With Logic” and the other name being “On With Lunacy.”

The OWL party had a candidate for each statewide position that year. I don’t remember who any of the candidates were, but I do remember that the lady running for secretary of state said that she was opposed to post-nasal drip and bed-wetting.

The OWL party headquarters was at an Olympia tavern, and everyone who declared themselves an OWL party candidate for office made no effort to hide the fact that the OWL party was created as just a fun sort of joke.

Surprisingly, statewide, in that year’s election, the OWL party candidates received quite a number of votes, even though they did very little, if any, campaigning.

The OWL party only existed in 1976.

How great it would be if we could again have another OWL party. If such a party was formed, it would not surprise me one bit if its candidates would receive many votes.
