Letter: Total ban shouldn’t be so daunting

The Columbian
Published: July 5, 2015, 12:00am

The July 1 story reported “Officials can’t stop fireworks.” County Councilor Tom Mielke can’t be serious when he says, “I’d hate to make a (fireworks) policy on a single dry year.” Surely he realizes that the hot, dry conditions will only continue to get worse as global warming engulfs us.

If it’s so impossible to pass a law banning these idiotic, juvenile, dangerous toys, then maybe the adults among us should borrow the tactics that are currently being used, to great success, by the anti-abortionists: Pass regulations that make it too onerous and/or expensive to buy and shoot off fireworks. For example, all fireworks vendors must locate within walking distance of a hospital. Anyone shooting off fireworks must do so within walking distance of a fire station. Anyone buying rockets must fill out a 50-page government form and undergo a colonoscopy, which will be televised on C-Span.

Who’s with me?
