Firefighters working to contain Horseshoe fire

A wildfire on the west side of Mount Adams in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has led to the closure of segments of the popular Pacific Crest Trail. Hikers were cleared off the trail and rerouted along adjacent forest roads and trails, according to information posted by forest service officials.

At 235 acres, the wildfire is 15 acres smaller than it was reported to be on Sunday, but it’s not considered contained. On Monday, helicopters dropped water on hot spots and active portions of the perimeter. Fire officials are scouting suppression options using strategies based on the Cascade Creek Fire that scorched more than 20,000 acres on the south and west sides of Mount Adams in 2012.
