The body of a Vancouver man who drowned Friday in the Columbia River was recovered Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old drowning victim was identified as Dimitriy Kuzmych, according to The Columbian’s television news partner, KATU-TV.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Mike Davis said the man was swimming in the river just south of Frenchman’s Bar Park when he began having difficulties and went under. The drowning was reported about 7 p.m.

A group of people who were with Kuzmych at the park told officers that he was missing.

Rescuers searched the water until nightfall but were not able to locate the victim.

The search resumed Saturday morning and Kuzmych’s body was recovered under 12 feet of water around 11 a.m., according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
