Letter: Equal rights define America

The Columbian
Published: July 13, 2015, 12:00am

Now comes the usual tension between the Bible and the Constitution. This time the subject is the unconstitutionality of state gay marriage bans and the right of homosexuals not only to marry but also to be treated like any other customers when buying goods and services. Put another way, bigots are being forced to live in a world where homosexuals can marry each other and not be refused purchases. It is the law, a law enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution guaranteeing all citizens the equal protection of the law, and in the First Amendment prohibiting legislative recognition of any religion’s dogma.

The Supreme Court also recognized the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and the government’s right to mandate individual insurance coverage including federal subsidies of those purchases.

I’m sure there are many who don’t like those decisions to the point of wanting to abolish the Supreme Court. But the court was created in the Constitution. You remember the Constitution. It’s the document Jesus handed to our Founding Fathers in that famous painting.

The single most important thing the Constitution provides is the right to have rights. That applies to all citizens regardless of any differences. That’s the idea I served in the Marines to defend. That ideal defines what it means to be an American.
