Letter: Put fireworks ban to a vote

Dave Clark’s July 6 letter “Fireworks addiction hurts citizens” was totally correct. The city and state focus on incoming sales tax monies. They don’t care about what it does to the well-being of humans and animals. I question just how many fireworks maniacs even know what they are celebrating.

It’s hard enough for humans but this is animal abuse. These people don’t realize that animals hear so much better than we do and they have no idea why the sound happens. It terrifies them.

Obviously, lots of dollars come from the sales tax that the fireworks salespeople have to pay. If the powers that be could re-arrange their brains so that a huge sales tax recovery also comes from the thriving marijuana business and manage to replace the fireworks tax monies with the marijuana tax monies and then write into law a ban on all fireworks, the current greedy system might be eliminated somewhat. California has had a ban on fireworks for years; why can’t we do the same?

Vancouver City Councilor Alisha Topper’s suggestion that we residents should be given the option of banning fireworks by voting is an excellent idea. I would vote for a ban. It’s time to forget about greed and instead focus on the rights and wishes of the people.
