Kara Winger saved her best javelin throw for her last at the 2015 Pan Am Games.

But so did Canada’s Liz Gleadle, whose final throw edged Winger for the gold medal Tuesday in Toronto.

Winger, a two-time Olympian who graduated from Skyview High School in 2004, took the lead on her last of six throws. The javelin sailed 201 feet, 7 inches, which was 15 feet farther than her previous best throw Tuesday.

But Gleadle followed with a throw of 206-2 to claim the gold medal.

Tuesday’s Pan Am appearance is part of a busy season for Winger. She won her sixth U.S. Outdoor title June 26 in Eugene, Ore., with a season-best toss of 213-1. She has competed in Diamond League meets in Shanghai, Eugene, Norway and Paris and currently ranks sixth in that league’s standings.
