A set of four-story apartment buildings, each with approximately 73 units, and an 82-room Holiday Inn Express are the next projects in the lineup at the 6-acre mixed-use development that’s been taking shape over several years around Southeast 192nd Avenue and 20th Street near the Vancouver-Camas border.

This week a subsidiary of Kirkland Development filed a pre-application with the city of Vancouver for the two-building apartment project called 192nd Station West Lofts near the southwest corner of 192nd Avenue and 20th Street, adjacent to the Candlewood Suites. The application calls for each building to contain a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, with 216 parking spaces on surface lots or in carports. Dean Kirkland, the project developer with partner Tom Files, said he hopes to begin construction in November and have the project completed in about one year.

Kirkland said he’s also preparing to submit an application for the Holiday Inn Express, which would be similar in appearance to the 83-room Candlewood Suites, an extended-stay hotel his company built that is set to open Oct. 1. Kirkland said he hopes to launch construction of the Holiday Inn Express in October or November.

Adding to the mix will be an 11,000-square-foot building that is already fully pre-leased for doctors’ offices, Kirkland said. Construction will begin later this year and should be completed in the spring, he said.

In total, the latest projects represent about a $50 million investment, Kirkland said. Still to come is a 147-unit high-end apartment complex with elevators.

While the overall development has been in the works for years, Kirkland said he is pleased with the way the pieces are coming together. “That’s a great area,” he said. “We like the east side of Vancouver.”

Kirkland and Files built the retail 192nd Avenue Plaza at 192nd and 20th in 2010. They control land on three sides of the intersection of 190th and 20th.

A pre-application conference on the proposed apartment project is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 3 at Vancouver City Hall. Contact Patti McEllrath at 360-487-7893 or Patti.McEllrath@cityofvancouver.us for more information.
