A volunteer nonprofit group that provides school supplies and holiday gifts to local children will celebrate its 30th anniversary Thursday with a party, school supply drive and fundraiser.

The Children’s Project will celebrate between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the plaza in front of the county Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

An ice cream social will be part of the celebration. A dunk tank will feature local political figures including Sheriff Chuck Atkins, Auditor Greg Kimsey, County Councilor Tom Mielke, Assessor Peter VanNortwick and Clerk Scott Weber.

The Children’s Project was founded by county employees, and now is a partnership between those employees and Fred Meyer’s Grand Central location, Star Touring & Riding Chapter 407, the Dragonfly Cafe and Lifeline Connections.

Attendees can bring school supplies to be donated to the Fruit Valley Family Resource Center, or cash donations may be mailed to the Children’s Project in care of the county Community Services Department, P.O. Box 5000, Vancouver, 98666-5000.
