King County sheriff’s deputy to be fired for sleeping on job

SEATTLE — King County Sheriff John Urquhart is firing a deputy caught sleeping on the job.

KING-TV says Urquhart told Deputy Joel Anderson in a July 21 termination letter that he will be fired Saturday.

Anderson is accused of sleeping on duty in January, as well as for leaving his Vashon Island post before the end of his shift.

Urquhart told Anderson it’s not the first time the deputy has been caught sleeping on duty and that it’s “egregious” because he is the only back-up for his patrol partner on Vashon.

Anderson appealed to keep his job, saying he was having trouble sleeping because of his home life and other issues.

Calls to the King County Police Officers’ Guild to obtain a statement on Anderson’s behalf were not returned.
