There’s a war being quietly waged in my kitchen: Where to store the olive oil? I say the counter, next to the stove (easily accessible for cooking) — a privilege not extended to lesser-used oils such as sunflower or sesame, flaxseed or coconut.
My partner, favoring a neat prep space, says stowed away with the other oils.
Truthfully, it’s not much of a battle, because I don’t mind fishing it out of the cupboard. And also, sharing a living space means compromise. Shouldn’t we all be afforded the occasional bout of Danny Tanner-like obsessiveness around the home?
Furthermore, I discovered a solution to our (barely a) war. What if we kept the oil on hand, not in a drippy bottle with the label peeling off, but in a vessel that actually looked good?
In a beautiful earthenware cruet, say, inspired by Portuguese pottery and featuring a tapered silhouette and cork stopper? Unison’s Alma cruets, available in gray and white, are modern-rustic pieces designed for storing oil and vinegar on your dining room table — or on the countertop for mixing up salad dressings and marinades. In either place, they’re likely to become permanent fixtures.
The ceramic is dishwasher safe (just pop off the cork before washing), and at only $25 each, a set would make a perfect house-warming gift. Or olive branch.
