Scio animal sanctuary faces funding shortfall

SCIO, Ore. — A Scio animal sanctuary is facing foreclosure if it cannot raise $300,000 by April 2017.

The Albany Democrat-Herald reports that the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization, is home to about 150 animals ranging from birds to a blind bison named Helen. Many of the animals were rescued from abusive or neglectful homes.

Former executive director Wayne Geiger started Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in 2002. He stepped down earlier this month after the organizations funding troubles were discovered.

Lighthouse treasurer and board member Paula Fordham says she does not believe Geiger intentionally caused any problems; he only concealed them from the board. Roughly $90,000 should have been paid off in full in 2012, and another $245,000 is potentially due in full in 2017.

Geiger did not respond to requests for comment.
