Firefighters on Friday morning mopped up an overnight brush fire that grew to 4 acres near the Livingston rock quarry in east Clark County.

Firefighters were called to the blaze reported at 9 p.m. Thursday at 25500 N.E. Highland Meadows Drive.

Arriving crews found flames burning between 2 to 3 acres of heavy brush and threatening power lines, according to emergency radio traffic monitored by The Columbian.

Crews got the fire under control and began establishing a wet line around the perimeter, according to East County Fire & Rescue. The area was described as having been previously clear cut and replanted, fire officials said.

At least 36 customers in the area lost power Thursday due to power poles damaged by the fire, but power to the residents has since been restored.

While crews fought the fire, officials knocked on the doors of a number of homes within a quarter-mile of the fire, advising residents to prepare for a possible evacuation should the flames come too close, according to radio traffic.

No evacuations were required, according to East County Fire & Rescue.

At midnight, the local firefighting crews handed over command to state Department of Natural Resources crews who mopped up the blaze. Firefighters from Vancouver Fire Department, Clark County Fire District 3 and Camas-Washougal Fire Department assisted with the fire suppression efforts.

The state agency has an investigator on scene looking into the cause of the blaze, DNR spokesman Tom North said.

East County Fire & Rescue reminded residents that the area is experiencing a severe dry period and a burn ban is in effect in Clark County as well as most of Washington and Oregon.
