Letter: Look back at how Iran evolved

An advertisement recently broadcast on television depicted Iran as a terror-sponsoring rogue nation that, once the Iranian nuclear agreement is ratified, will eventually have a nuclear weapon. One must wonder if this is a fair assessment of Iran’s role in the world and why the country may have chosen this path. A look back may help.

In 1953 our CIA, along with the British Secret Service, overthrew the democratically elected prime minister of that country, Mohammad Mossadegh. One issue was who should control that country’s oil reserves: the Brits or Iran? In Mossadegh’s place Reza Shah was installed, and his brutal tyrannical rule led to the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Is it possible that the lawless intrusion of two major Western powers set Iran on an anti-Western path forging ties with al-Qaida, the Taliban, Hezbollah and others?
