Search and rescue volunteers scoured an area near Trout Lake Friday looking for an 87-year-old woman who went missing Thursday while picking huckleberries.

Wasco Fujiwara of The Dalles, Ore., was with her daughter Lisa Fujiwara, 57, of Bend, Ore., at the Sawtooth Berry Fields in Skamania County.

Lisa Fujiwara told Skamania County sheriff’s deputies she last saw her mother at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday near Forest Road 24, according to the sheriff’s office.

She separated from her mother for a short time and when she returned she could not find her, authorities said. Wasco Fujiwara suffers from early-stage dementia, the sheriff’s office reported.

Sheriff’s deputies were called at about 3 p.m. and searched alongside other berry pickers. By 7 p.m. Thursday, volunteer searchers began arriving but did not locate the woman.

Friday morning, six volunteers searched the field alongside two dog teams and a fixed wing aircraft from the Hood River, Ore. Sheriff’s Office.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said that search efforts are set to continue through Saturday if needed.
