Competition awards

2015 YOUTH APPS CHALLENGE

Hockinson Middle School students were among the winners of the Youth Apps Challenge, a competition for middle and high school students, on May 9 in Seattle. Out of 154 apps submitted by teams, 14 were winners from Western Washington. The competition is designed to raise student interest in computer science education and careers.

The Descansarians team, with Hockinson students Morghan Codino, Seanna Miller, Kylie Veteran and Elle Winn, created an app based on the scientific theory of sleep cycles to help people get the right amount of sleep. Also from Hockinson, the Maximillian Maniacs, made up of students Sydney Henwood, Gabi Morley, Christa Phillips and Emma Royce, created an app that teaches young children the concepts of genetics. Both teams were coached by teacher Anna-Melissa Lyons.

MATH IS COOL MASTERS

A team of sixth-graders from Jason Lee Middle School won 1st place in Division I at the Math is Cool Masters statewide competition on May 16 in Moses Lake. The winning team, Lu Abuizzah, Larry Huang, Leanne Pham and Ryan Welch, was coached by math teacher David Tubb. Also, in Division 1’s individual scoring category, Welch took 2nd place and Abuizzah took 6th.

FORD/AAA STUDENT AUTO SKILLS COMPETITION

Ievgen Buchatskyi and Mitchell Cotton, representing Clark County Skills Center as a team, won fourth place in the annual Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition on April 28 at Renton Technical College. Teams from 10 schools statewide qualified to compete in the state finals. Justin Flick is their instructor. Buchatskyi is a senior at Heritage High School and Cotton is a senior at Hockinson High School.
