Vancouver — A public event in Vancouver next week will focus on the history of the Hanford nuclear site in Eastern Washington and its effect on the Columbia River.

Science on Tap, a regular lecture series in Vancouver and Portland, will explore the Hanford topic during a gathering at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Kiggins Theater, 1011 Main St. in Vancouver. Tickets cost $8 in advance, or a $10 suggested donation at the door. Food and drinks will be available, according to organizers.

The Hanford site, located near Richland, was used to make plutonium for nuclear bombs during World War II and the Cold War. Featured in next week’s lecture will be Abigail Cermak, Hanford coordinator with Columbia Riverkeeper, Dirk Dunning, a chemical engineer and nuclear specialist with the Oregon Department of Energy; and Tom Carpenter, executive director of advocacy group Hanford Challenge.
