Letter: Demand required tank standard

The Columbian
Published: June 8, 2015, 12:00am

On July 6, 2013, an oil train derailed in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, exploded and killed 47 people.

Right now, Vancouver Energy is proposing building an oil terminal at the Port of Vancouver. An oil train derailment could mean the deaths of thousands or the pollution of the beautiful Columbia River, similar to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Today, most oil is shipped in the DOT-111 tank car. The DOT-111 is unacceptable when shipping highly explosive materials. Vancouver Energy claims it will phase the DOT-111 out for the more robust DOT-120 tank car. However, there will still be millions of gallons of oil shipped through Vancouver in the unacceptably dangerous DOT-111 for an undetermined amount of time.

In order to prevent the DOT-111 from carrying explosive oil through Vancouver and risking lives, the people of Vancouver must demand that Gov. Jay Inslee require Vancouver Energy to use the DOT-120. Send Gov. Inslee an e-message at https://fortress.wa.gov/es/governor/ and demand that the oil trains use the DOT-120.
