PORTLAND — Oregon State Police confirmed Tuesday that a husband and wife found dead with their 8-year-old son in a Rainier, Ore., double homicide-suicide had been having marital trouble and were separated. Police said family members reported that the woman planned to file for divorce and had expressed concerns about her safety.

Autopsies conducted Tuesday by the Oregon state medical examiner’s office showed Danny Abbott, 48, killed himself while 44-year-old Laury Abbott and 8-year-old Danny Abbott Jr. were homicide victims. All died of cutting and stabbing injuries.

The bodies were found late Sunday in the father’s home.

Laury Abbott’s mother, Wanda Prosser, told The Oregonian that her daughter had gone to pick up her son from her husband on Sunday.

The woman had custody of her son during the week and was living with her youngest sister in St. Helens, Prosser said.

The couple had been separated for about nine months, Laury Abbott’s family members said. They married about 12 years ago, Prosser said.

The little boy was a second-grader at McBride Elementary in St. Helens.

He was an enthusiastic student and “a natural leader to whom others were drawn,” the St. Helens School District said Tuesday in a statement.

Rainier is 50 miles northwest of Portland.
