PORTLAND — A 12-week-old kitten will soon undergo surgery to have part of a bullet or gun pellet removed from her cheek after she was found shot in the head and left in a Portland dumpster.

KATU-TV reports that the kitten, dubbed Lucy, was found May 28 and brought to the Oregon Humane Society for medical attention. It is unknown how long she was left in the trash.

Humane Society lead veterinarian Jacqueline Blanchette says she is optimistic but cautious about Lucy’s recovery because she is so young and may have neurological damage.

The Humane Society and the Animal Legal Defense Fund are offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to the person or persons who shot Lucy.
