Letter: Power for change in hands of voters

The Columbian
Published: June 20, 2015, 12:00am

The morning of June 17, the south-bound rush-hour traffic on the Interstate 5 Bridge was shut down due to an overturned semi-truck. The southbound traffic on the Interstate 205 Bridge was further congested as traffic was diverted. I had sympathy for drivers needing to commute to Portland, but couldn’t help but blame the drivers who chose not to vote in the last election, and those who voted for our current officials.

County Councilor David Madore continues his questionable fight against a new I-5 bridge that includes light rail, and Councilor Tom Mielke follows Madore.

State Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, recently began singing a different tune after killing the original new I-5 bridge proposal, and now cannot understand why no one wants to bring it back from the dead.

Finally, Madore and Mielke gave state Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, a cushy new job and an even better retirement. Now he is working two public jobs and drawing two public salaries, so his retirement will be based on the five highest paid years as a public employee.

We, the voters, or those who chose not to vote, gave their power away to a man who would be king, Madore. This man continues to defend the qualifications of the county’s Environmental Services Director Benton, who once suggested the solution to the I-5 Bridge was not light rail, but to use helicopters to solve this problem.
