Matchday: Portland Timbers vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

Timbers notes: The Timbers (7-5-4, 25 points) are third in the Western Conference. They are tied on points with the Galaxy, but Los Angeles has played two more matches. The Timbers are also fourth in the overal Supporters Shield Standings, trailing D.C. United (31 points from 18 games) and Cascadia rivals Seattle (29 points from 16 games) and Vancouver (29 points from 17 games). Portland will be trying to extend a club-record four-game MLS regular-season winning streak — an overall five-game win streak including a U.S. Open Cup win at Seattle. … The Timbers have outscored their opponents 10-2 during this five-game stretch. … The Timbers and goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey now have posted seven shutouts through 16 league games, tied with Vancouver and David Ousted for second in the league behind eight shutouts for Seattle’s Stefan Frei. … The Timbers and Galaxy played to a 2-2 draw on April 15, with Alan Gordon’s stoppage-time goal denying Portland a home win. … Wednesday’s game marks the midpoint of the MLS regular season for the Timbers. …

Timbers coach Caleb Porter on the Galaxy: “They’re the best team in the league. … They have a lot of firepower and we’re going to have our hands full.”

Galaxy notes: The Galaxy (6-5-7, 25 points) is tied for third in the Western Conference with Portland but has played two more games. Los Angeles is coming off a 5-1 home win over Philadelphia after a three-match winless stretch. … Forward Robbie Keane played the full match in the win over Philadelphia, his second 90-minute shift since missing seven games with a groin injury. The 2014 MLS MVP, Keane has two goals and two assists in eight appearances. Gyassi Zardes had a goal and two assists against the Union. Zardes and Alan Gordan each have a team-high four goals … Los Angeles has scored 21 goals and allowed 20 this season, but has outscored opponents 14-5 at home. L.A. is 6-1-2 at home. The June 6 1-0 loss to the Whitecaps ended an unbeaten run of 29 matches at StubHub — 23 in MLS regular-season games.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena downplayed his team’s performance despite the 5-1 win over Philly, saying his team was sloppy but finished some great goals.
