Letter: No honor in operating Guantanamo

The Columbian
Published: June 23, 2015, 12:00am

Recently the Senate passed a massive defense policy bill that insures that our Guantanamo Bay prison will continue to operate despite President Obama’s wish to close it. So America, the beacon of justice, will continue to imprison about 116 inmates indefinitely without formal charges and interrogate without restraint. These men have been jailed for 13 or 14 years, and many are there because someone turned them in for a bounty. This inhumane treatment has resulted in nine deaths, six probably by suicide.

How much longer will this stain of dishonor blight America’s standing in the world?
