Local soccer: Victory fall in battle for first place

In a match between the top teams in the Evergreen Premier League, Vancouver Victory FC fell 2-1 to South Sound FC Wednesday in Tacoma.

With four matches left, the Victory trail South Sound by one point.

Vancouver next plays Saturday against the Spokane Shadow at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Nemesis advances in youth tournament — The FC Salmon Creek Nemesis clinched a spot in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Championships with a Wednesday 3-0 win over Westside Timbers of Beaverton at the tournament in Boise.

The Nemesis went 2-1 to finish second in their pool in the girls under-14 division. They will play their first elimination game at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Ava Benedetti scored late in the first half to give the Nemesis a 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half, MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson and Brin Wovert scored four minutes apart to increase the lead. Wednesday’s matched featured the champions of Washington and Oregon.

If the Nemesis win their quarterfinal match, they will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. The regional final is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.
